Simple Squamous Epithelium
Kidney - Renal Corpuscle 400X
The section displays a renal corpuscle or Bowman’s capsule in the medullulary region of the kidney. The outer or parietal layer of the capsule contains simple squamous epithelial cells (purple arrows) with flattened nuclei. Within the capsule, glomerular capillaries (green arrow) are present along with their associated podocytes (orange arrow). The podocytes at the periphery of the capillaries are specialized epithelial cells that compose the inner or visceral layer of Bowman’s capsule. A small amount of filtrate is in the capsular space (Cs).
Mesothelium - Mesentery 400X

A surface view of mesentery mesothelium displays a sheet of irregularly-shaped, tightly packed, simple squamous cells. An oval nucleus (N) is visible in most cells. Mesothelium is the epithelium of serous membranes which lines the peritoneal, pleural, and pericardial cavities. The squamous cells lubricate both the parietal and visceral surfaces of the membrane with serous fluid, and reduce friction. Mesothelium is derived from embryonic mesoderm.
