Tooth Enamel Formation Sag.Sec.Pig 40X

The sagittal section illustrates the anatomy of the crown of a pig incisor in the late stage of enamel development.  At this stage of development the tooth root has not yet formed.  The dental papilla (1), odontoblast layer (2), dentin matrix (3), dentin (4), enamel (5), ameloblast layer (6), and papillary layer (7) can be identified.  Observe that the outer edge of the enamel is darker.  This represents a region of newly formed enamel.  The entire crown is surrounded by connective tissue (CT).

Tongue Visceral Skeletal Muscles XS-LS 100X

The tongue contains both intrinsic and extrinsic lingual muscles. The four pairs of intrinsic   muscles are confined solely to the tongue, and have no external attachment.  Extrinsic lingual muscles extend to the tongue from their points of origin on the mandible, hyoid bone, soft palate, or bones of the skull.  The blue arrows point to skeletal muscle fascicles that have been sectioned transversely.  The green arrow indicates a longitudinally sectioned muscle.

Tongue Taste Buds 400X

Taste buds are seen on the lateral surface of circumvallate papillae.  A deep cleft (C) separates the papillae.  Taste buds are barrel-shaped bodies with an opening called the taste pore (1).  Microvilli from sensory neuroepithelial cells (2) extend microvilli or taste hairs through the taste pore.  Neuroepithelial cells are taste receptor cells that transmit sensory information to cranial nerves VII, IX, and X.  Sustentacular or supporting cells (3) also have microvilli, but they do not synapse with cranial nerves.  Basal cells (4) differentiate into both neuroepithelial and sustentacular cells, and replace them about every 10 days.

Submandibular Gland Mixed Acini 100X

The submandibular gland is a compound tubuloacinar/tuboalveolar gland.  It is a mixed gland containing both protein-secreting acini (yellow arrows) and mucin-secreting (blue arrows) acini.  Since the acinar cells release their secretory products by exocytosis, submandibular glands are classified as merocrine excretory glands.  Numerous excretory ducts (black arrows) are present in the photomicrograph.  Some adipose tissue (At) has invaded the parenchyma.

Sublingual Gland Mixed Acini 400X

The section shows the sublingual gland as a mixed gland.  Lightly stained acinar cells (blue arrows) of the predominant mucous acini are surrounded by loose connective tissue (CT).  Serous cells form demilunes of von Ebner (yellow arrows) around the bases of the secretory acinar cells of the mucous acini.  Purely serous acini are seldom found in the sublingual gland; they are nearly always found in close association with mucous acini.  Numerous darkly stained acinar cell nuclei are seen in the image.  The flattened nuclei are contractile myoepithelial cells (white arrows).
